Birth Story Sessions

Transform your birth story into a timeless work of art.

Because it already is.

You crossed a threshold. Your body opened. Your life changed forever. And somewhere in the blur of contractions, decisions, and that first cry—your story was written.

But who's holding space for your story?

Everyone wants to hold the baby. But who's witnessing you—the one who just walked through fire, shed an identity, and emerged transformed?

Birth Story Sessions are where I hold you.

Where your story—all of it—becomes poetry.

The Vision: Every Birth Story Deserves to Be Honored

Birth changes you at the cellular level.

It rewires your brain, restructures your body, reorders your priorities, and initiates you into a new version of yourself. Whether this is your first birth or your fifth, whether it went as planned or nothing like you imagined—you crossed the portal.

Your birth story isn't just a sequence of events. It's the record of your transformation. It's the moment you learned what your body could do, what you could endure, how fiercely you could love before you'd even met your baby.

And yet, so many birth stories go untold. Unprocessed. Unwitnessed.

This is the work: To create space where your story is received with the reverence it deserves. To translate your experience into art that you can hold, share, and return to throughout your life.

We can honor birth as the rite of passage it truly is.

We can give mothers the gift of being seen—not just as vessels for babies, but as the protagonists of their own powerful stories.

The Villain: The Silence That Steals Our Stories

There's a cultural force at work that diminishes birth stories, and it has a name: The Hush.

The Hush is what happens when:

  • You're told your birth "didn't go as planned" but offered no space to grieve or process what actually happened

  • Your traumatic birth is met with "at least the baby is healthy" (as if your experience doesn't matter)

  • Your beautiful, empowering birth feels too vulnerable to share because birth often comes with a culture of comparison and you don't want to make others feel bad

  • Your birth was years ago, so people expect you to have “moved on” from a profound experience that changed you

  • Your loss—miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion—is treated as something shameful or too painful to speak about

  • The most transformative experience of your life gets reduced to a checklist in a medical chart

The Hush tells us:

  • Birth is a medical event, not a sacred passage

  • What matters is the outcome (healthy baby), not the journey (your experience)

  • Difficult births should be forgotten quickly and moved past

  • "Good" births don't need processing because everything went fine

  • Your feelings about your birth are less important than other people's comfort

The Hush operates through the healthcare system that rushes through your postpartum visit without asking how you're really doing. It lives in the well-meaning friend who changes the subject when you try to talk about what happened. It whispers that you're being dramatic, dwelling too much, not grateful enough.

But here's what The Hush doesn't want you to know: Your birth story holds medicine. For you, for your family, for other people who will hear it and feel less alone. When we silence birth stories, we disconnect from our collective wisdom. We lose the threads that weave us into the lineage of every person who has ever given birth.

The Hush is not your fault. You didn't create the culture that minimizes maternal experience. But you can reclaim your story. You can speak it aloud. You can transform it into art.

Here’s what I want you to know

Your birth story matters.

Not because it was perfect. Not because it went according to plan. Not because it's "inspiring" or "educational" for others.

Your birth story matters because you lived it. Because you were there, in your body, making decisions, feeling everything, becoming someone new.

Birth Story Sessions create space for you to:

  • Be witnessed without judgment as you tell the full truth of your experience

  • Process what happened—whether it was beautiful, traumatic, complicated, or all three

  • Find the poetry already living inside your story

  • Receive a custom-written poem that becomes a timeless family heirloom

  • Honor your transformation in a culture that rushes past it

This is not therapy (though it can be therapeutic). This is not coaching (though it may clarify things). This is witnessing as art-making—a sacred exchange where your story becomes a work of beauty you can hold forever.

Instead of carrying your birth story as something fragmented, confusing, or unresolved, you can hold it as a complete work of art. A poem that says: This happened. I was here. I transformed.

Meet Your Doula & Personal Poet

Hey, love. I'm Kira, and I wrote my way into birth work.

I've always been drawn to women's stories and women's wisdom—writing poetry that explores our rites of passage from menstruation to motherhood. The more I wrote, the more I wanted to immerse myself in birth work, using everything I’ve been given: my heart, my hands, and my art.

I’ve published a poetry collection called Bodies of Water & Women, and I hold an MFA in Writing with a focus on poetry. I'm a certified full-spectrum doula. And I believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have for healing, integration, and transformation.

Birth Story Sessions bring together everything I know about holding space, witnessing transformation, and translating lived experience into language that lasts.

This is my offering to you: a chance for your birth story to be fully seen, deeply heard, and transformed into art.

The Details

What You'll Receive

  • A 90-Minute Virtual Session (or in-person if you're within 30 minutes of Wooldridge, MO)

We'll create a grounded, calm space—just you and me—where you can tell your birth story in full. The highs, the lows, the moments that still take your breath away, the parts you've never said aloud.

I'll listen deeply. I'll ask questions that help you go a layer deeper. I'll reflect your power back to you.

This is your time. Not to entertain me, not to make your story palatable, not to perform gratitude or strength. Just to tell the truth of what you lived through.

At the end of our session, I'll thank you for the honor of witnessing your story, and we'll close with a virtual (or real-life) hug. You'll leave feeling heard, held, and seen.

  • Your Custom Birth Story Poem

Within 3 weeks of our session, I'll deliver a bespoke, one-of-a-kind poem crafted specifically from your story.

This isn't a generic "congratulations on your baby" verse. This is your transformation—your body, your choices, your surrender, your fight—translated into language that honors exactly what you experienced.

You'll receive:

  • A digital copy of your poem (beautifully formatted)

  • Full ownership and rights to your poem (it's yours forever)

  • A timeless family heirloom you can frame, share, gift to your child when they're older, or keep private

  • Optional add-on: An archival-quality print of your poem, professionally designed and mailed to your door ($44)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Since we have 90 minutes together and I want to write the most potent poem for you, I recommend focusing on one birth per session.

Imagine giving each of your children a custom poem when they're older—a work of art made specifically to honor their unique journey earthside. Imagine the healing you'll give yourself by processing and alchemizing each birth into beauty.

Of course, if time or budget doesn't allow for multiple sessions, you're welcome to share whatever you want during our time together, and I'll translate it into one poem.

  • A mentor once told me: "Every pregnancy ends in birth."

Whether you experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion, I will listen to your story with the same care, compassion, and non-judgment that I would any other experience.

I have written about the full spectrum of reproductive experiences in my own poetry, and I believe there is healing power in using art to express what is so common yet rarely spoken about.

I would be honored to write about your experience, whatever it may be.

  • Your birth doesn’t have to be fresh in your mind everyday to make a powerful poem. In fact, the more you’ve lived into the story—seeing your children grow up, living with a loss, or gaining wisdom from the experience—the more medicine there is for us to explore.

Whether your child is hitting a milestone birthday or you’re simply feeling deep in your bones that it’s time to tell this story, I’ll hold your hand as you connect the past to the present. I’ll offer grounding techniques to help you revisit old memories (without reliving old traumas). I’ll honor who you were at the moment of your birth story and who you became after.

The truth is women remember their births and postpartum periods for a lifetime. How you were treated, who was there for you—you’ll never forget it.

So I want you to know it’s never too late to rewrite this rite of passage, on your own terms.

  • If you're pregnant, we can create a poem that honors who you are before this major transformation—and set a beautiful intention for what your birth can be.

Whatever you're feeling on this precipice—excitement, fear, anxiety, awe, anticipation, frustration, peace—it's all welcome here.

Your Birth Story Session can be a gift to your present self and your future self. What do you want to tell the version of you who will have given birth? What does she want to tell you now?

  • This is exactly why Birth Story Sessions exist.

Trauma needs witness. It needs language. It needs to be held in a container where it can be seen, honored, and transformed.

I won't minimize what happened to you. I won't tell you to "look on the bright side" or remind you that your baby is healthy. I'll sit with the fullness of your experience and help you find words for what you lived through.

Poetry doesn't erase trauma—but it can help you carry it differently.

  • Poetry has a unique power to hold large, swirling experiences in a small, potent space. Birth is enormous—physically, emotionally, spiritually—and poetry can contain all of that complexity without flattening it.

Poetry works with mystery, not just facts. It doesn't need to explain everything or tie it up neatly. It can hold paradox: the beauty and the pain, the surrender and the fight, the love and the grief. Birth lives in those contradictions, and so does poetry.

Poetry also gives us emotional clarity. Research shows that reading or hearing a well-crafted poem activates reward centers in the brain and can produce physical chills—especially near the ending. That's the moment when language clicks into place and something previously unspeakable becomes felt and known.

Your birth story deserves that kind of resonance. Not a clinical report. Not a rushed retelling. But language that makes you feel seen at the deepest level.

  • Birth Story Sessions are not therapy, though they can be deeply therapeutic.

I am a doula and poet, not a licensed therapist or trauma-healing practitioner. What I offer is compassionate witnessing, active listening, and the transformation of your story into art.

I'm comfortable holding space for difficult emotions and co-regulating through intense experiences—that's part of my training as a doula. But if you're working through significant trauma, I encourage you to support yourself with a qualified therapist alongside our session.

Think of this as complementary to therapeutic work, not a replacement for it. Your story deserves multiple forms of support.

  • Absolutely, if that feels right for you. This is your session, so you decide who's in the room (virtual or physical).

Some clients want their partner there to add their perspective. Others want solo space to process. Both are welcome.

  • Absolutely! Birth Story Sessions make a profound gift for a new mother, a friend who's still processing their birth, or someone marking a birth anniversary.

This goes deeper than a massage or a spa day (though those are lovely too). This is a gift that says: "Your story matters. Your transformation deserves to be honored. I see you."

    How gifting works:

    • Purchase the session and let me know it's a gift when you book

    • I'll send a beautiful digital gift certificate you can share

    • The recipient schedules their session when they're ready

    • You can remain anonymous or include a personal note

This is the gift that keeps giving—a timeless work of art they'll treasure for life.

  • Not that I know of—and that's exactly why I created it.

This service represents two of the things I'm most passionate about: the power of poetry and the beauty of birth. It's an honor to combine them.

I've spent years honing my craft as a poet, and this feels like one of the most meaningful ways I can share my skills and be of service. Birth stories deserve to be held with artistry, reverence, and care—and poetry is the perfect vessel.

In the future, I'd love to teach other birth workers and writers how to transform birth stories into healing experiences and personal art for their clients. For now, I'm here offering this gift to you.

My promise to you: Birth Story Sessions are—

Judgment-Free

Your friends, your mom, your doctor, your Instagram follows—everyone has opinions about how birth is "supposed" to be.

Their opinions are not invited here.

I'll listen from my heart, not from my biases. While I have my own beliefs about birth (as anyone does), my opinions are not centered in your story. Your experience is.

As Rumi wrote: "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there."

Confidential

Everything you share during our session stays 100% confidential. Your poem is entirely yours to keep, cherish, and share as you wish.

Because I write publicly about birth work, I may ask your permission to share your poem in the future (either with your name or anonymously—your choice). This is only a request. I honor your "no" completely.

If you choose to share your poem with others, I only ask that you credit me as the author.

Compassionate

Birth is complex. Maybe your boundaries were violated. Maybe you had an unexpected complication. Maybe your birth was blissful but you feel guilty talking about it when others have struggled. Maybe this birth was the greatest day of your life.

Whatever your story is, I'll write about it with compassion. I'm not here to change your narrative or coach you through it—only to honor your story for what it is and find the poetry already living inside it.

Why Birth Stories Matter

When we tell our birth stories, we:

  • Integrate our experience (research shows that narrative processing helps heal trauma and build resilience)

  • Reclaim our power (naming what happened returns agency to us)

  • Connect to lineage (we join every person who has ever given birth)

  • Create meaning (we transform pain or confusion into coherence)

  • Reveal what’s possible (our powerful, healing stories show others what they can claim for themselves)

  • Offer medicine to others (our stories help others feel less alone)

Your birth story is not "just" a personal memory. It's a thread in the larger web of human experience. When you honor your story, you honor all of us.

This poem is so precious to me. It helps me remember and honor the biggest transformation I've ever gone through in my life. I am so happy that I have this poem to transport me back to such a miraculous time.
